Sodium Bicarbonate

Cleaning – Sodium bicarbonate can be made into a scouring paste by adding water to form the desired consistency. Apply the paste to areas of tough dirt, scum and grime with a cloth or brush. Scrub the area until the area is clean. Rinse to remove any residue. It is especially effective at cleaning tile grouting.

Deodorising – broadcast the powder across carpets, pet beds, rugs and mattresses. Leave for at least a half an hour before vacuuming up. Place a bowl of the bicarbonate in your fridge to absorb unpleasant odours. Freshen shoes and boots by covering the inner soles with the powder and leave for about an hour before vacuuming away.

Laundry – use a tablespoon of bicarbonate instead of laundry detergent for a basic wash (especially useful if you run out of your usual laundry soap). Apply a paste of the powder to stained clothing or linen items, work the paste into the stain with a cloth and rinse before adding to your usual wash cycle.
