Natural sea sponges have been used for centuries for personal and domestic cleaning. The porous structure of each sponge activates plenty of foam when soap is applied to its wetted fibres.
Our natural sea sponges are harvested sustainably by a family business in the Mediterranean sea off the Greek island of Kalymnos and are carefully hand cut to ensure the regrowth of the sponges. We chose the sponges over the loofah option due to the high farming and carbon impact of the loofah industry.
Sponges only fall into a sub-animal kingdom category due to their multicellular nature which differs from the way that plants feed. They have no central nervous system nor consciousness.
Sometimes we get questioned by vegans as to our sea sponge choice, but I wonder if they are fully informed? A mushroom is neither animal or plant, so why is it ok to eat them? Like sponges, they do not photosynthesise; like sponges they have neither consciousness nor central nervous system. Once a mushroom is picked for consumption it has gone, whereas a sponge is cut for regrowth and sponges need to be managed in the same way that forests do, to encourage a balanced ecosystem.
Natural sea sponges are self-cleaning and naturally antibacterial, due to their ability to quickly dry out their fibres, preventing the sponge from breeding bacteria. They are fully biodegradable.
Before using the sponge, soak completely in water to become big and soft. After usage, rinse clean and let it dry thoroughly. To care for your sponge, place in salty water for twenty four hours once or twice a month.
